Project Funder: Birmingham City Council

Project Manager: Nicola Toms nicola@superact.org.uk

Project Aim

In addition to Our Big Gig and Our Big Gig EXTRA Superact are now responsible for one of the city’s arts forums in Yardley.  Birmingham is the only city in the country to have developed this scheme forming a network of 10 arts fora across the city, one in each district.  Each district is also matched with an Arts Champion from one of the larger arts organisations in the city.

Arts InThe Yard is the local arts forum for Yardley district and is managed by Birmingham based Superact Project Manager Nicola Toms.  Arts In The Yard is paired up with Ikon Gallery who are currently celebrating their 50th anniversary.

Ikon is an internationally acclaimed art gallery situated in central Birmingham.  Housed in a magnificent neo-gothic school building, it is an educational charity and works to encourage public engagement with contemporary art through exhibiting new work in a context of debate and participation. It offers free entry to all.

The aim of the project is to programme regular arts activities in Yardley and engage a diverse range of members of the community in regular community arts activities.

Outcomes

Arts In The Yard has been working in Hobmoor Community Centre, delivering dance, dhol drumming and art workshops throughout 2014 and 2015.  The project culminated in a celebration event in February 2015 where a piece of collaborative community artwork was unveiled.  The piece has been steered by local lead artist Hasret Brown, whose work is influenced by traditional Islamic geometric design.
