With our Handmade Wellbeing Conference and Exhibition launching on Wednesday 22 March, there has been lots of activity going on with the project.

10 Radio Interview

Last week Janine Stedman, Handmade Wellbeing Project Manager, and ceramicist Mary Kembery were guests on 10 Radio.

You can also listen to the interview here.
On 8 March Janine gave a talk to the Tiverton Soroptimists about the project. Celebrating International Women’s Day, Janine met up with the group earlier in the morning at Lowman Bridge. The rainy day did not dampen spirits as members chatted to passers-by to raise awareness and collect donations for Children’s Hospice South West.
Soroptimist International Tiverton & District is a not-for-profit group focused on improving the lives of women and girls through charity partnerships. They support local charities and run a popular ‘Singing for Dementia’ group in Tiverton.

Janine spoke about the European and UK outreach of the Erasmus+ Handmade Wellbeing project and described the art sessions that Superact has been running in Wellington and Cullompton care homes. The Soroptimists were very interested in the handmade element of the project as they have a well  established group of women knitters who create colourful, tactile twiddle muffs and cosy bed socks for people in local care homes.

There was much discussion on the importance of access to art and crafts, especially for people living with dementia and physical frailties. It was agreed that it would be beneficial to have funding for artistic activities for older people at home and in care settings. We also talked about the benefits of artistic activities for carers.

Janine concluded by extending an invitation to to our Handmade Wellbeing Conference and Exhibition at Tonedale, Wellington taking place later this month, showcasing the work that has been produced in Wellington care homes.
