Exe-Arts working with Exeter’s homeless community

This round of Exe-Arts Plus is supported by the Exeter Community Board with funding towards doing creative sessions with the homeless and those in temporary housing facilities. To this end we are developing a programme with St. Petrock’s and with Gabriel House. The lives of this group of people are extremely chaotic and we wanted to provide a time of calm where they felt free to express themselves and focus on the positive. Our first session was using music, guitar and drumming, and was attended by about 5 people. We discovered some very talented musicians who were so pleased to be able to sit and make music. Others joined in with hand percussion and were really happy to sit and listen to some very skilled guitar playing too.

We will continue with music for a couple of weeks and then move on to visual arts later in November. We would like this to become a regular thing that participants can depend on for a weekly uplifting afternoon.
