Our community Exe-Arts Plus sessions are onto a flying start! Since 8th October we have had pottery, ceramics and photography workshops taking place in both Exeter Community Centre and St. Sidwell’s Community Centre.

The first Family Saturday session for Exe-Arts PLUS had a great turn out with family groups and some University students joining in.

Mandy Biscoe, a new potter to Exe-Arts, ran the session which saw people making a plate or platter and a small coil dish or animal. We had some extra monsters thrown into the mix too! Everyone coloured their work in with slip so it was all finished in one session. Only firing left to do.

It was a very busy & friendly atmosphere with refreshments and chatter, and everyone happy to get their hands mucky! We’re looking forward to the next family session, Willow Art, on Saturday November 5th.

The second pottery session delved into hand building using the slab technique. Putting together shapes from rolled out, flat sections of clay, like rolling out pastry! Boxes, tiles, vases, and dishes can all be made with this method.

We also discussed methods of decorating, specifically slipping your work with coloured clay. Participants have to decide now whether to slip their pieces before they are biscuit fire or glaze them afterwards. Decisions, decisions!

The third evening pottery session saw a throwing demonstration on the wheel with everyone having a go. Clay flew off in all directions! It was an incredibly entertaining session. This will be followed by a week off so all the work can be fired ready for the final glazing session on November 3rd.
